09|19|2017 Berlin Aperto turns political communication into a digital user experience

BMVg Website on a laptop screen

For the German Ministry of Defence’s new website, Aperto has crafted a modern citizen experience that highlights key ministry issues and fields of work, in a compelling and accessible way

The new German Ministry of Defence website is online, with a modern design and new content focus transforming it into the central platform for German security and defence policy. The objective is to communicate ministry policy transparently and accessibly for all citizens. Emphasis is placed on the Ministry’s core issues and fields of work, which feature prominently on the homepage. The website will become the first port of call for news or questions relating to Germany’s defence and peacekeeping operations.

Aperto assisted BWI GmbH — the main contractor of the German Armed Forces — in the complete implementation of the relaunch. The Berlin agency created a new, contemporary design and meticulously developed user experience (UX). The key, middle-term topics are presented in a high-quality, editorial format with prominent photography, videos and interactive elements. This not only establishes a context for media reports and dialogue, but also affords all users better insight into current events. The bmvg.de website’s responsive design and micro UX also ensure a great mobile experience.

A new topic structure, flexible content formats and a tonality concept for written and visual content was developed, based on a jointly devised content strategy. Existing content was significantly condensed,  presented in a fresh format and enhanced by additional information. All changes were made with the requirement to clearly orientate users on the government’s guiding policies on safety and security.

Anika Wilczek, Executive Director at Aperto: „To inspire an interest in political topics and communicate information in an accessible way is more relevant than ever. Through close and agile collaboration with the BMVg (German Ministry of Defence), we were able to create a modern platform that satisfies users’ increasingly high digital service expectations, and enables them to understand security policy.”

The website uses a new CoreMedia content management system, with an exchangeable drag & drop module that makes it particularly flexible and easy to use. The final implementation phase was scrutinised with complete quality assurance throughout. Aperto also used a web analytics system and optimised the website for search engines (SEO). The new website complies with the highest accessibility standards in accordance with BITV 2.
